Sciatica (sciatic pain)

Sciatica is common and painful but chiropractic care can help.

Sciatica is pain along, or irritation to, the sciatic nerve. This nerve begins as 3-5 nerves (usually L4, L5 and S1) that leaves the lower part of the spine and form together to supply the buttock, back of the thigh and lower leg with sensation and control of muscles.

The symptoms DO NOT tell is where the injury is and the injury can occur in many places along the nerve as it journeys out of the spine, through the pelvis, in between muscles in the buttock and down into the leg. Due to the complex and interrelated nature of the lower back, pelvis and leg it is common that there is more than one structure irritating the sciatic nerve and all aspects need to be addressed.

Common areas of irritation include facet joints, slipped disc, herniated disc, sacroiliac joint injury, piriformis syndrome, injury to the tensor fasciae latae (TFL) also known as the iliotibial band (ITB), hamstrings, dural tension and is affected by postural change and changes to gait.

3 Important Areas To Achieve Great Results

Inspired Chiropractic care looks at 3 important areas to achieve great results. 1) The pain mechanism, what is painful, 2) Injured structures including facet joints, discs, sacroiliac joints, piriformis muscles, TFL (ITB) as well as structural assessment and gait analysis and 3) The nerve information sent between the body and the brain which can result in reinjury and reduced healing rates (proprioception).

We have a well-established reputation for fast effective relief from lower back pain, leg pain and sciatica.

Addressing the pain only is a common reason for reinjury and many clients tell us that their back just “went” – what is now as a lower back failure. This is not necessarily a sign that the lower back is weak but that the motor part of the brain has lost the ability to make fine motor corrections because of repeated injury and loss of good nerve feedback to the motor part of the brain. This needs to be addressed and repaired as part of a more permanent solution.

Our research tells us that chiropractic care is effective for sciatica and those who seek help soon after the injury get results quicker. Chiropractic care is also effective for long term sciatic pain.
