Creating Your Healing Zone: Why Rest Matters for Recovery

athlete chiropractic

When injured athletes walk into my office, they all ask the same question: “Can I keep training?”

As a chiropractor, I see this scenario play out weekly with golfers, runners, and gym enthusiasts who are reluctant to pause their activities despite ongoing pain.

The Cost of Pushing Through Pain

Most people understand that rest promotes healing, but passionate athletes often prioritize their sport over recovery. Their dedication is admirable but can lead to prolonged injury when they refuse to create what I call a “healing zone.”

I recall one particularly determined client who experienced chest pain but was fixated on completing the Great North Run. Despite seeking treatment just ten days before the event and still experiencing considerable discomfort the day before, he insisted on participating.

What happened next illustrates the dangers of ignoring your body’s signals. During the race, his chest pain intensified with each step until he collapsed in agony. After briefly recovering, he stubbornly continued—only to experience a terrifying “pop” in his chest that brought him to his knees, unable to breathe.

While the pain mysteriously resolved afterward, allowing him to finish the race, this outcome was incredibly fortunate. His symptoms could easily have indicated a progressing heart attack or other serious cardiac issue.

How to Create Your Healing Zone

When we’re injured, we should take inspiration from sick animals who instinctively retreat to a quiet place until they recover. Here’s how you can create your own healing zone:

  • Prioritize Sleep – Sleep is the foundation of physical and psychological recovery. Give yourself permission to sleep generously when healing from injury.
  • Mind Your Nutrition – Healing requires both consuming beneficial nutrients and avoiding harmful substances. Reduce your intake of alcohol, caffeine, sugar, and refined carbohydrates like bread and pasta.
  • Embrace Gentle Movement – Low-impact activities such as walking or swimming can promote circulation without aggravating injuries.
  • Minimize Stress – Avoid stressful interactions and consider addressing any outstanding emotional issues that might be creating tension.
  • Seek Support – Confide in trusted friends about your challenges—social connection supports healing on multiple levels.
  • Restore Balance – Take this opportunity to reassess your lifestyle and create a more balanced approach moving forward.
  • Disconnect from Technology – Electronic devices can interfere with rest and recovery processes. Create tech-free periods to enhance healing

Remember that creating a healing zone isn’t just about physical recovery—it’s about giving your entire system the space it needs to repair and strengthen. Your body wants to heal, but you must provide the right conditions for it to do so effectively.
