Women May Perform Better in Sport During Their Period

Understanding the Research

woman-sprinting-down-pier-along-water-sqA recent study involving University College London and the Institute of Sport, Exercise & Health has revealed an important insight into how the menstrual cycle may influence sports performance. Published in Neuropsychologia, the research assessed how hormone fluctuations relate to reaction time, accuracy, attention and decision-making in contact sports.

The findings suggest that many women may actually perform better during menstruation, even though this is often when they feel their worst. This challenges a long-standing belief that the menstrual phase weakens performance or reduces cognitive ability.

Why Performance May Improve

In the study, 241 women completed sports-related cognitive tasks, repeating them 14 days later to compare performance across their cycle. Researchers found that participants made fewer mistakes and reacted more quickly during menstruation.

By contrast, the luteal phase, which occurs after ovulation and before the period starts, was linked with slower reaction times. This appears to be related to reduced oestrogen and increased progesterone, which can affect how the brain processes information. These shifts can make athletes feel mentally slower and may help explain why injury rates may be higher at this stage.

Reframing Confidence in Sport

One of the most powerful lessons from the study is that perception does not always match reality. Many women assumed they performed poorly during menstruation because they felt unwell or fatigued. Yet the results revealed significant improvements, including faster ball-handling skills and better anticipation.

This awareness can be empowering for women who train or compete regularly. Understanding why performance may fluctuate gives athletes the confidence to adjust strategies, trust their bodies and play with renewed assurance.

“Research like this helps women approach sport with greater confidence. When you understand how your body functions, you can train smarter, reduce uncertainty and feel more in control of your performance,” says Dr Jonathan Wilson (Chiropractor).

For athletes and active women, appreciating the science behind the menstrual cycle can help create healthier training habits and better long-term outcomes. Coaches, clubs and health professionals can also use this knowledge to offer more supportive, personalised guidance.
