A Chiropractic Point of View

Chiropractor adjusting an older manWhen chiropractic was discovered in 1895, a lack of health would often bring the administration of harsh patent medicines containing alcohol, cocaine, mercury or arsenic.

In the midst of this, a healer, experimenter, and freethinker by the name of Daniel David Palmer in Davenport, Iowa asked a simple, yet profound question:

“I desired to know why one person was ailing and his associate, eating at the same table, working in the same shop, was not. Why? What difference was there in the two persons that caused one to have pneumonia, catarrh, typhoid or rheumatism, while his partner, similarly situated, escaped? Why?”

Great question.

Palmer went on to discover that it is smarter to focus on the person with the disease, than focus on the disease in the person. That is still true today.

Chiropractors start with the assumption that good, vibrant health is normal. Our second assumption is that if you are not experiencing optimal health, something must be interfering with your natural, inborn ability to self-heal and experience life to the fullest.

Yet many people look outside ourselves to find culprits that they blame as a way of explaining why they are sick.

Three common ones are:

  • Bad luck. Accidents often fall into this category—being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
  • Germs. Blaming a cold or the flu solely on germs overlooks one essential ingredient—being a hospitable host!
  • Genetics. The newest fall guy is having a ‘bad gene.’ Yet, DNA expression is often a reaction to our environment.

Chiropractors consider a much more significant influence to your health. ‘How well is your body’s master control network, the Central Nervous System, working?

When clients consult a chiropractor with a symptom, they often want the chiropractor to busy themselves with the art and science of chiropractic and they will be well.

I often ask, “who heals you?”

This basic question reveals an important point. Healing comes from within.

This amazing self organising, re-creating ability that we require to repair that which is broken, grow that which is withered and replace that which has been lost, does not come from another person or from any chemical.

It is the powerful expression of life when a damaged body replaces old tissue with new cells and heals itself; chiropractors refer to this as the body’s ‘Innate Intelligence.

This innate or inbuilt system is an expression of a properly working body and is co-ordinated by the nervous system—your master control system.

Chiropractic adjustments, rather than move and realign joints, stimulate and re-programme the nervous system and allow healing to begin where it was not taking place before.
